Bride to Bride: Engagement Pictures

June 25, 2014

Happy Hump Day:) Part of me feels like this week is going by so slowly, and the other part of me feels like it’s flying. I have a styled shoot on Friday, and then we leave for vacation on Saturday so I think that’s why!! So much to do for both events, but I am SO EXCITED for them to get here!!!

Today we’re back with a Bride to Bride post … this week I’m talking about your Engagement Pictures! I’m feeling sentimental since Matt and I will celebrate one year of marriage in less than a month… and I still remember our engagement like it was yesterday!!

Most photographers offer a complimentary engagement session in their package; if they don’t, you need to add it! Engagement Sessions are a way for you to work with your photographer “in action”, they help you & your fiancé to be comfortable in front of the camera, they allow you to have images for wedding stationary & décor, and they’re a wonderful keepsake for the two of you to have!

Here’s a few tips to think about when planning your engagement session:

  • Location, Location, Location – Choose a spot that means a lot to the two of you, or reflects a bit of your personality. Make sure it has an abundance of natural light, and work with your photographer on the time of day since that can vary depending on the season.
  • What to Wear –  If your fiancé hates wearing ties, don’t make him dress up for the pictures!! Wear clothes that reflect who are individually & who you as a couple. Don’t overanalyze or over do it. Think of “coordinating” vs. “matching”; and just be you! (If you’re planning to use them on your Save the Dates, plan an outfit that coordinates with your wedding colors & theme!)
  • Styled vs. Natural – You know I love a good styled shoot:) So for me, it was important that Matt and I have a portion of our session styled. I knew I wanted to use those “styled” shots on our Save the Date; however, I also knew I wanted more “natural” images, too. While we used the “styled” images on wedding stationary, the “natural” images are the ones we printed to hang in our home. Normally you have 2-3 outfit changes in your session, so plan accordingly!! And, if you’re like me and want to use signage or props in your pictures, make sure they match your wedding theme/colors so that it’s all one cohesive piece.

These are just a few tips to make your engagement session stress-free & more fun! Definitely chat with your photographer about tips he/she may have, and remember to HAVE FUN! You’re ENGAGED… that’s something to celebrate:)

And, since I AM feeling sentimental, here’s a look down memory lane at a few of my favorite engagement pictures from our session with Katelyn in December 2012! We chose a location in Harrisonburg since this is our first home as a couple, we tried to “coordinate” vs. “match” and we did some “styled” images with props, and “natural” images … Knox was even in a few! Enjoy:)
